Abstract

Nowadays, the role of transport in sustainable development is very clear and irrefutable. Outstanding contribution to the transport sector in the development of urban infrastructures in countries reflects the close relationship of all sub-sectors of the economy with the transport sector. On the other hand, in investigating the role of transport in sustainable development, it is necessary to consider factors such as the environment, social influences (customers' expectations) and, of course, the enterprise. This article examines the impact of rail transport on urban development in Iran during the years 1975 to 2014. Autoregressive method with distributed lag is used for the analysis of Econometrics. And to check the development of rail transport, the load factor in tons multiplied by the kilometer, distance in terms of person multiplied by the kilometer and the number of passengers are used and the amount of consumable diesel indicator is used to consider the environmental indicators. Finally, the conclusion is that the load in tons multiplied by the kilometer, distance in terms of person multiplied by the kilometer and the number of passengers and consumable diesel has a meaningful impact on urban development in the short-term and long-term.
